Introducing Catch Up Literacy

Background research

Catch Up Literacy draws on existing research on reading, including:

  • Poor readers’ concepts of reading (Medwell, 1990)
  • The importance of fluency (Stanovich, 1980)
  • The reciprocal gains of reading and spelling (Clay, 1991)
  • Taking a known sight word as a starting point for analogies (Goswami, 1994)

Catch Up Literacy is suitable for...

CATCH UP LITERACY is suitable for all struggling readers (working towards NC Level 1 or above), including:

  • Struggling readers who find it difficult to learn in group situations
  • Struggling readers who are significantly below the expected National Curriculum Level for their age
  • Struggling readers whose Reading Age is significantly below their Chronological Age

Graph showing for whom Catch Up Literacy is suitable. Chronological Age. National Curriculum Levels. Reading Age.

As there isn’t an exact correlation between NC Level/Reading Age and suitability
for Catch Up Literacy, the shaded area has a graduated edge.

NB Catch Up Literacy is designed for learners who find reading difficult rather than learners who are beginning to learn to read.
